[audio]Cardiff Philosophy Cafe February 2011 - The Nature of Nurture, Anthony Isles - Cardiff Philosophy Cafe
Epigenetics and Ethics Dr Michael Arribas Ayllon (CESAGen, Cardiff University) Dr Anthony Isles Medicine, Cardiff University In an age of advancing genetic science, the age-old debate over the primacy of nature versus that of nurture is often thought to have been largely settled. Stories in the media often depict our genes as determining the physical and even mental characteristics we possess. But the study of epigenetic phenomena complicates this picture...

[texts]Facile N-Methylation Reaction of Amide Functional Heterocycles with Dimethyl Sulfate, Chemspider January 16, 2012. - John Harry MacMillan Ph.D.
John H. MacMillan and Stephen S. Washburne, Temple University. Chemspider January 16, 2012. 4-and 5-substituted 1,3(3H) oxazine-2,6-diones (oxauracils) are easily alkylated under mild conditions with dimethyl or diethyl sulfate in boiling acetone and slurry of sodium bicarbonate. Workups are straight forward and yields typically in the 60-70% range. The reaction should prove of utility also for alkylating uracils and other amide functional heterocycles.

[texts]Symbiosis and the origin of eukaryotic motility - Margulis, L.
Ongoing work to test the hypothesis of the origin of eukaryotic cell organelles by microbial symbioses is discussed. Because of the widespread acceptance of the serial endosymbiotic theory (SET) of the origin of plastids and mitochondria, the idea of the symbiotic origin of the centrioles and axonemes for spirochete bacteria motility symbiosis was tested. Intracellular microtubular systems are purported to derive from symbiotic associations between ancestral eukaryotic cells and motile bacteria...

[image]Hypothesis - a unifying mechanism for nutrition and chemicals as lifelong modulators of DNA hypomethylation. [2009](IR91) 02.png - Duk-Hee Lee,1 David R. Jacobs Jr.,2,3 and Miquel Porta4
Background: Although both nutrition and chemicals are important environmental factors modulating epigenetic changes, they are commonly studied separately by researchers in different fields. However, these two environmental factors cannot be separated from each other in the real world because a number of chemical agents contaminate food chains. O b jective: We propose a unifying mechanism that can link epigenetic alterations in relation to DNA hypomethylation due to chemical agents and to nutrien...

Figure 1. A hypothetical unifying mechanism linking DNA hypomethylation due to chemicals and nutrient deficiency or imbalance. Vit, vitamin. DNA methylation pattern can be disturbed because of depletion of GSH when it is chronically consumed for conjugation of chemicals and their metabolites. Under usual circumstances, metabolism of homocysteine contributes to both the methionine and GSH synthesis pathways...
